BRIDGE RECTIFIER SCHOTTKY DIODE IN POE-PD APPLICATIONS  

The bridge rectifier Schottky diode plays a crucial role in PoE-PD (Power over Ethernet - Powered Device) applications. PoE technology allows Ethernet cables to transmit both data and power simultaneously, which is highly useful for modern network devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points, and VoIP phones. In these devices, the PoE-PD needs to convert the AC voltage from the Ethernet cable into DC voltage to drive internal circuits. The bridge rectifier circuit is the key component for completing this conversion process.

 

Schottky diodes offer multiple advantages when used in bridge rectifier circuits. Firstly, Schottky diodes have a low forward voltage drop, typically between 0.2V and 0.4V, significantly lower than the 0.7V of standard silicon diodes. This characteristic substantially reduces power consumption during the rectification process, especially in high current applications, effectively minimizing power loss and improving overall efficiency. Secondly, Schottky diodes have extremely short recovery times, usually in the nanosecond range, which means they can switch from conducting to non-conducting states more quickly, reducing switching losses and thereby increasing the operational frequency of the rectifier circuit.

 

In PoE-PD applications, the bridge rectifier circuit usually consists of four Schottky diodes arranged in a bridge configuration to achieve full-wave rectification. This setup not only maximizes the use of the AC voltage from the Ethernet but also ensures the stability and continuity of the output voltage. Due to the low reverse leakage current characteristic of Schottky diodes, the rectifier circuit maintains high efficiency even when operating at high frequencies, further enhancing the overall performance of PoE-PD devices.

 

Choosing the appropriate bridge rectifier Schottky diode product requires consideration of several factors, including rated voltage, rated current, package type, and thermal management performance. For example, Microsemi's PD70224 is suitable for applications requiring 60V/1A, while Vishay's VSB2045CT can handle demands of 45V/20A. Different products are designed for various application scenarios, meeting the needs of both small PoE-PD devices and high-power applications.
